In Bloom January 2010

Happy New Year!Happy New Year! What is a New Year without resolutions? Although we've made them in years' past, and shared a few with you, we've decided to shake things up a bit in 2010.

We know that winter can be a time of quiet solitude. Holidays have passed. Night falls sooner. We're the first to admit that dimming the lights and snuggling into a favorite chair with a good book sounds heavenly. But, this year our resolutions have taken us in another direction. We're feeling light of heart and shouting out our joy just feels so right.

January is big, bold, bright and beautiful at Awesome Orchids. First, we've taken things in our shop a bit over the top with our larger than life iron and wire bird cage. Next, we brought in a huge variety of fresh, colorful, now in season Phalaenopsis. Seemingly taking flight next to our aviary centerpiece, these orchids shimmer in the sunlight. Finally, delicious lemon, lime and tangerine citrus colors are blooming all around us, found not only in our orchids and plants but in our compote pots, containers and ceramic trays.

This month follow our lead. Send your regrets to all those invitations you receive for quiet solitude. Make it your resolution to let your own joyful spirit shine brightly and beautifully throughout the coming New Year.

Focus on Colorful CitrusFocus on Colorful Citrus
It's true. A carefully selected statement piece can add just the right amount of focus and serenity to any room in your home.

Avoid that cluttered look we all dread by choosing one large decorative item that sets the tone. Then ask yourself what is attractive to your eye. For many white, aqua and green color schemes in coastal Florida homes the answer is often citrus. A spacious compote pot in lime green displays a varieity of orchids for a wowee effect. A tangerine ceramic tray does double duty: sitting on your sidetable, it frames potted orchids or plants. Placed on a bar cart, it organizes your stem- and glassware.

Equally true is that the best spaces evolve over time. When you're ready, mix in soft lemony yellow and white orchids and glazed pots. They'll add soothing tranquility to help see you through even your most stressful decorating dilemmas.

Our Tip: Keep a little citrus in your kitchen pantry. Bella Cucina's Key Lime, Meyer Lemon and Blood Orange spreads, available at our shop, perk up your day from morning toast to evening dessert.

Mixing it UpMixing It Up
Surely it's never too early to welcome a touch of spring into your home, office or special event. And, January is the perfect time to select colorful, seasonal and in bloom Phalaenopsis, hand-selected from local growers, now on our shop shelves.

With so many lovely orchid choices, don't limit yourself. Pick one shade, then start mixing things up a bit! Choose a trio or quartet of solid, spotted and striped Phalaenopsis all in the same or similar hue. Grouped together or scattered throughout your space, they're a delightful reminder that spring will soon be here.

Mixing it UpOur Tip: Hearing more and more about watering your Phals with ice cubes? We recommend this method only when your Phals are grown in very absorbant sphagnum moss (not a bark medium as it allows too much drainage).

For a large table arrangement of several 6" grower pots with interconnecting stakes and ties, adding 2 or 3 ice cubes each week for a 6" plant is a practical and effective way to hydrate your Phals. Remember to mist once a week any exposed roots that rest above the moss medium to help ensure that your grouping of Phalaenopsis orchids is thoroughly watered.
