In Bloom February 2010

Being NoticedIsn't it nice to be noticed? This month, Awesome Orchids has been in the spotlight in the pages of Sarasota and SRQ magazines and was featured in a lovely local blog, ShoppingInSarasotaFL.

We're finding that confidently following our joy has had a noticeable effect on others in unexpected ways. Recently, an admiring customer exclaimed aloud that he must reschedule his flight back home to Missouri. He simply needed another day to browse through our shop. From graceful lady slippers in pale greens and yellows to artisan glazed pots from Italy in primary colors to silver framed seashell prints – his perfectly chosen souvenir of a wonderful holiday in Sarasota – our dear customer overlooked nothing that Saturday afternoon.

It is nice to be noticed. Being passionate about what we love we've created a place where inspiration grows, the unexpected surprises and community gathers. And, although all this attention has been flattering, we'd like to switch roles and share with you a few of our favorite discoveries that are inspiring us right now. It is our small way of saying thank you for all that you do to encourage and support us on this most remarkable of journeys.

We're not usually prone to playing favorites, until now. We admit that we've been gazing adoringly at our new lamps, pillows, garden stools — perfect indoors as a side table or extra seating (center photo) and glazed pots. Taking on a comfortable, homey quality since their arrival, our shop has that warm welcoming feel that comforts us during February's overcast days.

Setting the standard for relaxed elegance are our artisan-designed pillows from Kevin O'Brien Studio. Patterns are steeped in tradition yet updated for our more casual and contemporary living. Handmade in silk velvet and linen, they'll put the finishing touch on any room in your coastal Florida home or office space. (Left photo.)

Our friends at Vietri have done it again. Their collection of Rustic Garden Terrace pots and containers bring the past into the present. Mix and match scalloped, handled or striped pots in vivid red, golden yellow, pale ivory and other unusual colors for a unique, romantic Italian country look that's yours alone. (Right photo.)

Create a small corner of paradise out on your lanai or patio this February with our gorgeous, long-lasting flowering cymbidiums now available in our shop and at our downtown Farmers' market stand.

Florida's mild winter days and cooler nights encourage locally grown cymbidiums, with cascading sprays of multi-colored blossoms, to start blooming. After your cymbidium's flowers have finally faded, plant your orchid in your garden or place in a container on an outdoor table or stand. Left in very bright light with frequent waterings, your cymbidium will continue to bloom for years.

Orchid Tip Simple things can make the biggest difference for healthy orchids. With infrequent watering remember to inspect your Phalaenopsis orchids' leaves regularly for any accumulated dust. Gently wipe leaves clean with a soft, lightly-moistened cloth or towel.

Of course you've seen them. Scattered around our shop they nest, perch, guard and roost. We're talking about our shop's delightful birds, of course. And it's time we chirped their praises.

Balanced atop vintage croquet balls, our one-of-a-kind songbirds croon a carefree melody — if only in our vivid imaginations. Each songbird, a unique, handcrafted artwork made in the U.S.A., will add a hint of nostalgia to your bedside table or office desktop.

Colorful clip-on chickadees, pedestal birds with miniature sprig vases and peaceful stone doves infuse affordable style into any tablescape. Gather a covey of feathered friends from our shelves to elevate your next weekend brunch or Tuesday night family supper tables.
